Mindfulness-Based
Stress Reduction
The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program is an intensive 8-week course offering mind and body practices for physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being. During the weekly 2.5-hour sessions, participants learn breathing techniques, mindful meditation, simple yoga, and an exercise focusing on bodily sensations called body scanning. Practices that transform the way we think about and react to stress (like non-judging awareness and don’t-know mind) are an integral part of every class.
In addition to training in mindfulness practices, the class includes group discussions and games, stories, and poems. Each course includes a one-day retreat.
The MBSR program was developed in the early 1980s by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., a University of Massachusetts molecular biologist who was also an avid yoga instructor and Insight/Zen meditation practitioner. His remains unique in the combination of skills it offers for body, mind, and emotional awareness.
In addition to offering 2 programs each quarter at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (since October 2001), I offer 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programs at Google and the California Yoga Center, and teach mindfulness courses, workshops, and training programs for schools and nonprofits in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Stanford University, and the California Institute for Integral Studies.
Participants in the MBSR Program practice daily with the guidance of recordings in MP3 format and/or on CDs provided in class.
